Nikola Tsolov third fastest in free practice in Baku
Nikola Tsolov kicked off the crucial twelfth round of the Formula 2 season by setting the third-best time during free practice on the street circuit in Azerbaijan's capital, Baku.
Toward the end of the 45-minute practice session, the Bulgarian Lion managed a lap of 1:56.821, placing him in the top three. The Campos driver achieved this result even though DRS on the long start-finish straight was disabled due to rookie Hiyu Yamakoshi going off the track.
Fastest in the session on the shores of the Caspian Sea was Kush Maini, who topped the timesheets with a 1:56.532. Second place, 0.204 seconds behind, went to Alex Dunne, who also didn't use DRS at the end of his final flying lap, while Maini was able to activate his movable wing.
Tsolov finished 0.289 seconds behind the leader, and Colton Herta and Gabriele Minì completed the top five behind him. The Bulgarian Lion's main title rival, Rafael Câmara, took sixth place, 0.778 seconds behind Maini. Also in the top 10 at the end of the session in Baku were Laurens van Hoepen, Martinius Stenshorne, Ritomo Miyata and Mari Boya.
The Formula 2 race weekend in Baku continues today at 13:00 Bulgarian time with the first of two qualifying sessions, which will set the grid for the sprint race and the first feature race. The second qualifying session, which will determine the starting order for the second feature race on Saturday, is scheduled for 13:30.
