Bayern and Arsenal deliver a grandmaster-class draw
Bayern Munich and Arsenal drew 2-2 in the headline clash of the third round of the Champions League league phase. Goals from Eze and Rice for the Gunners and Davies and Kane for Bayern decided a match marked by injuries to Saka and Luis Díaz.
The standout game of the Champions League round lived up to its billing. Arsenal took the lead in the 26th minute through Eberechi Eze, who had come on early for the injured Bukayo Saka. The goal was initially ruled out for offside but was given after a review. Bayern leveled about ten minutes later when Harry Kane played a brilliant pass to send Alphonso Davies clean through against David Raya.
After the break, Kane converted a penalty for 2-1, awarded for a Jurrien Timber handball. Arsenal replied in the 82nd minute with a powerful strike from Declan Rice, set up by substitute Viktor Gyökeres.
Bayern played without Michael Olise, Joshua Kimmich and Jamal Musiala, while Luis Díaz, who came on in the second half despite a fitness issue, was taken off after around 20 minutes. Arsenal were missing William Saliba.
Kane scored in his tenth consecutive Champions League match, a run bettered only by Cristiano Ronaldo (11). Manuel Neuer made his 163rd appearance in the competition, drawing level with Lionel Messi and Thomas Müller in third place on the all-time list. Bayern extended their unbeaten home run in the group/league phase to 40 matches but sit just 14th with 5 points. Arsenal’s streak of 14 straight league-phase wins came to an end, and they are seventh with 7 points.
